Scratching, for cats, serves two purposes. They scratch to stake out their territory. Cats have scent glands in their feet that deposit the cats scent whilst scratching (only other cats will be able to smell this scent). Cat scratching also helps them get rid of old claw husks whilst sharpening their claws.
Possible solutions:
• Provide a scratching post
• Use a water pistol to squirt the cat when scratching furniture
• Place orange peel near the furniture (cats dislike citrus smells)
