The Somali cat is a long haired Abyssinian, first appearing in America in the 1950's. The Somalis temperament is the same as the Abyssinians being smart, active, playful and curious. The main difference between the Somali and Abyssinian is the length of coat, however unlike most longer haired cats, Somalis shed very little hair. They are mainly a red and ruddy colour coming in silver and blue also. Somali kittens are dark in colour when first born, changing coat colour with maturity around 18-24 months.
