Beagles were developed primarily for hunting hare, rabbit and other small game, due to their keen sense of smell. The modern breed of Beagle was thought to have been bred in England in the 1830’s from several other breeds of dog. Beagle dogs are not one to be let off a lead in open spaces as they have the tendency not to stay around, rather following any strong scent they may pick up. Beagles are commonly found at airports being used for drug and bomb detection in passenger bags.
