The worlds tallest breed of dog, the Irish Wolfhound, though not the heaviest. They were originally bred as a dog of war by the ancient Celts and by modern day Irish to protect their homes and live stock. The Irish Wolfhound almost vanished in the 19th century due to its exportation into various countries as a gift for royalty. A man by the name of Captain Graham rebred the Irish Wolfhound with other dog breeds such as: Great Dane, Deerhound, Borzoi and various other dog breeds. This in turn saved the breed from extinction. Irish Wolfhounds have surprising speed and very loyal to their owner.
